Class theme/topics discussed: Fake News

Goal of the class: To practice argumentation and discussion

How did you structure the class?

Warm-up: (15’)

Students ask each other about when and why they lie, it will lead to the topic of fake news.

They get a worksheet to prompt conversation which is attached at the end of this sheet.

Activity 1 (15′)

Students watch a video about fake news

http://www.elmundotoday.com/2017/11/un-arcoiris-en-barcelona-convierte-en-homosexuales-a-15-000-personas/

Then, they share their reaction since it is a very ridiculous article.

Activity 2 (30′)

Students in pairs will get one different article with fake news. They will have to read it and present it as in the video that they saw at the beginning of the class. It is a role play, they will stand in front of everyone as if they were hosting the news.

Then, they will have to lead a debate with their classmates about the news. Students will get visual aid on the screen.

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Powerpoint presentation

Fake news texts

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

The success in this class resides in the articles chosen. The ones I found for this class were very appropriate and ridiculous and that prompted discussion.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

It is a very challenging lesson plan for Intermediate, however, if this class is done towards the end of the semester it will probably work very well as their confidence speaking Spanish will have increased.

How did you structure the class?

Head’s up: cultural events

Warm-up (10’)  ¿What would you like to do in the future?

Students will stand up and will mime so that the rest of people have to guess what they are. Students will not be allowed to say the name of the profession, they will have to explain in Spanish what the profession is about. I will brainstorm useful vocabulary in the whiteboard so that they keep it as a reference.

Activity 1 (video and discussion)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nQTo0aKuw8

  1. (5’) Students will be asked what they know about the employment situation in Spain.
  2. (10’) An interactive short film will be shown on the screen. The video is called “La Entrevista” “The Interview”. The video is interactive as it stops at some point to prompt student’s reactions and guesses. It also includes some hints on vocab to facilitate comprehension.

The video tackles the topic of the over qualification at companies and how desperation pushes people to happily take any job that is under their skills. It all happens throughout a job interview in which the boss is clearly taking advantage of this precarious situation.

  • Students will also make notes on the questions the boss asks as they will use them in an activity later on.
  1. (10’) Discussion Feelings

What do you think is the main topic of the video?

What is wrong?

What does it say about the situation in Spain?

How could a society improve that?

Does it happen in your country?

Do you think that the fact that she is a woman influences the position?

Is it common in your country to see men as the boss and women as secretary or cleaner?

Activity 2 (20’) (JOB INTERVIEW/role play): In pairs, each student will take a role. One of them will be a manager, and the other one will be interviewed for the job. For this activity students will have some resources on how a job interview is carried out. Additionally, they will get a handout on the table with accurate questions so that they can improve their grammatical structures as well as their fluency.

First, they will prepare their role (one of them will prepare the profile of the candidate, and the other one will prepare the profile of the employer/company)

Then they will have an interview, at the end, some of the people will show their interview in front of the class.

What technology, media or props did you use? (Internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

I think this class works very well, sometimes it can take longer and might be split into two classes.

Depending on your personality it can either be a joy of shared fun, food and life experiences; or a nightmare of unwashed dishes, bad smells and empty toilet paper rolls.
  2. Give some student several fun printed blogs. Ask them work in pairs, let the student who got the printed blog tell their partner the stories they saw. This partner tells the same story to the third person and the third tells the fourth person. The fourth student tell the story to the class and then the first student tell everyone the story he/she told is changed or not.

JP S18 ADV Hidden Sentence Game

Language Resident Name: Ayaka Matsuo

Day and Date: 2/20/2018

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): Advanced Japanese

Class theme/topics discussed: Conversation Project / Hidden Sentence Game

Goal of the class: By the time this class ends, students will have decided what to do for their project.

How did you structure the class?

Activity1 (10 min): Warm – up

We talk about the weekend.

Activity2 (20 min): Brainstorming and Discussion

We talk about conversation class projects. I ask some students to explain what it is to students who don’t know. Students come up with as many ideas as possible as brainstorming. Then, we discuss to make it one we will really work on.

Activity3 (25 min): Hidden Sentence Game

Students are divided into 2 groups. One student from each group comes to pick one “hidden” sentence. Then, I give a topic. The two students don’t show their sentence to the rest of the class and start to talk about the topic. They try to convey the conversation in which they can use the sentences. The other students guess what their “hidden” sentences are. They have to detect what the opponent player’s “hidden” sentence is. When they thing the sentence comes out, they shout “stop” and say the sentence. If it is correct, they gain 1 point. If it is incorrect, they lose 1 point.

Activity5 (5 min): Wrap-up

I introduce them the upcoming cultural activity.

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

Everything worked well. The game, which I tried for the first time, was really fun. I limited the time they could have conversation by 3 minutes and also made another rule that if they couldn’t use that sentence within 3 minutes they lost 1 point.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

I would keep it as it is.

JP S18 INT/ADV School Rule

Language Resident Name: Ayaka Matsuo

Day and Date: 2/22/18

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): Advanced Japanese

Class theme/topics discussed: School Rules

Goal of the class: By the time this class ends, students get to know typical Japanese school rules and will be able to discuss some rules, supporting their opinion.

How did you structure the class?

Activity1 (10 min): Warm – up

We talk about strangest / funniest / strictest school rules.

Activity2 (10 min): Brainstorming

Students are divided into two groups; one group is teachers, the principle and the school and the other group is students and parents. They come up with opinions that support their position. I choose one topic from what they told in Activity 1.

Activity3 (15 min): Discussion

Students discuss. I write the opinions they say on the white board so they remember what their points are.

Activity4 & 5 (25 min): Brainstorming and Discussion

We repeat the process of Activity 2 and 3 with a different topic.

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

Everything worked well. I wish I could have somehow made more corrections on their utterances, which would improve their vocabularies or expressions.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

I would make a list of vocabulary they might not know yet.

ES F17 INT Love on Tinder

Conversation Class Lesson Summary

Language Resident Name: JOSE GOMEZ

Day and Date: 09/27/2017

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): INTERMEDIATE

Class theme/topics discussed: Love, cultural differences in relationship.

Goal of the class: To learn vocabulary related to relationships and ways of meeting people in Spanish.

How did you structure the class?

Pre-warm up: Students answer some questions about love and the ways they meet people. This is the time to mention Tinder as it will be relevant for the rest of the class.

Warm-up (15’): Word-search about physical and personality features.

Activity 1 (5’) Brainstorming : Students brainstorm adjectives to describe people

Activity 2 (20’) Create your own Tinder profile

Students get a Tinder template and create their own fictional profile of a social network to meet people. In this they will have to fill their details, plus fun facts and interests.

Here they are also advised to include a silly pick-up line that the instructor will provide

Activity 3 Speed dating (25’)

Since they are intermediate students, they get some set phrases begin their conversations and not get stuck.

Students will be divided in two rows. Then they will have 4 minutes to talk to each other in a speed date. In here they will have to talk about their online profiles in person and share some ice breaking sentences that they have learnt in class.

Students ask each other questions about themselves. Requirement, they need to use at least one pick up line

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Pick up lines (below)

13 word-search sheets love word search

Speaking Prompts for speed dating (below)

13 Tinder templates tinder profile

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

It was a bit challenging at first, but they picked a lot of vocabulary from the brainstorming and felt confident to use it and talk about it later. The speed dating was again a success, they had a lot of fun and practiced the target structures and vocabulary.  Having some set phrases to start the conversation was key to avoid students not talking or not knowing how to start. The activity turns very humorous when they use pick-up lines and have very ridiculous profiles.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

I think some students are shy to talk about themselves in a speed dating activity. Therefore, it is better if the instructor tells them from the beginning that they should create fictitious characters to avoid awkward situations.

If you have a more detailed lesson plan, please attach it below (OK to use target language for that).  Please attach any handouts as well.

Handouts, laptop, tv, MEMO game

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

The class went well, students seemed to enjoy the roles they were given in the class. The activities motivated them to speak, ask questions and interact with each other and the LR. The slang test was a success too, because it is one of the biggest areas of interest of the students.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

I would dedicate less time to the slang test and make the students work as a group in this activity.

CN F17 ADV Trolley problem

Language Resident Name:

JING XU

Day and Date:

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class):

Chinese, Advanced

Class theme/topics discussed:

 Trolley problem

Goal of the class:

To Practice their oral Chinese skills and understand ethics ect…

How did you structure the class?

  1. Discuss with students about the trolley problem with the following points:
  • There is a runaway trolleybarreling down the railway tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever, the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. However, you notice that there is one person on the side track. You have two options:
  • (1) Do nothing, and the trolley kills the five people on the main track.
  • (2)Pull the lever, diverting the trolley onto the side track where it will kill one person. Which is the most ethical choice? Let students work in pairs and share their views and then share with classmates.
  • As before, a trolley is hurtling down a track towards five people. You are on a bridge under which it will pass, and you can stop it by putting something very heavy in front of it. As it happens, there is a very fat man next to you – your only way to stop the trolley is to push him over the bridge and onto the track, killing him to save five. Should you proceed? Let students work in pairs and share their views and then share with classmates.
  • A brilliant transplant surgeon has five patients, each in need of a different organ, each of whom will die without that organ. Unfortunately, there are no organs available to perform any of these five transplant operations. A healthy young traveler, just passing through the city the doctor works in, comes in for a routine checkup. In the course of doing the checkup, the doctor discovers that his organs are compatible with all five of his dying patients. Suppose further that if the young man were to disappear, no one would suspect the doctor. Do you support the morality of the doctor to kill that tourist and provide his healthy organs to those five dying persons and save their lives? Let students work in pairs and share their views and then share with classmates.

JA S17 INT “Japanese Song & TV Show”

Language Resident Name: Yohichi Tagami

Day and Date: Monday, February 6, 2017

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): Intermediate Japanese

Class theme/topics discussed: Japanese Song & TV Show

 Goal of the class:

The students will be able to understand the basic contents of Japanese song and TV show.

How did you structure the class?

Activity 1 (2 min) Attendance check and Announcement

I check students’ attendance and give them announcements.

 Activity 2 (8 min) Warm-up

I casually ask the students about their weekend and Japanese New Year’s Party held last Friday.

Activity 3 (25 min) Review of the song “Mirai-e”

The students listen to the song with lyrics and fill in the rest of blanks while listening. Then I introduce some vocabulary and we review the meaning of lyrics sentence by sentence together in the class. Then I give them several questions related to the song and students talk about them in the class. In the end, we sing the song together in the class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6Eyu2V4iDs

Activity 4 (25 min) Japanese Show

I ask a question about what you would do if you pick up some money. Students share the idea by demonstrating themselves in the class. Then, I introduce the show in the class and give them a question related to the theme on the show. We exchange the ideas in the class and watch the show together in the class. Then we review general information of what they have seen. I also give them explanation about some vocabulary not familiar with the students. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-vmsFO_mMc

Back-up Activity (15 min) Listening to Japanese short comedy

I give them the theme before watching the clip. Students brainstorm what the story is about by sharing the ideas in the class. Then, we watch a clip together in the class and review general information of it. I also give them explanation about some vocabulary not familiar with the students.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi_cgVxlJCw&t=17s

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Powerpoint

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

The class was good in general. I was able to get the song activity done quickly and to move on to the next activity. I just found the short comedy, which was supposed to do in the class today, difficult, so I switched the activity with another one that I just came up with right before the class. Honestly, it was not prepared enough because of that sudden change, but I did my best. I could prepare enough before conducting the class, so that I could instruct the class well.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

When I conduct new activities in my intermediate class, I often failed as I feel in that way, and I find many points needed to be revised by the next class of teaching. This semester I usually try new activities in my intermediate class, so I need to be prepared enough more than I did in the last semester; otherwise, the class goes terrible. I need to be more aware of my delivery, explanation, and instruction for guiding the class from now on.

Activity 3 (20 min): Introduction of Valentine Day

I simply ask the students about the Valentine day upcoming this week and announce the today’s topic. I also ask them about general information of it with the perspectives of both America and China and write them down on the whiteboard. Then, I ask them about their memory of that day and share them in the class. After that, I lead the discussion by giving them the equal chances where they are able to express their ideas in the class. Then, I talk about the recent trend of Japanese one by introducing the types of chocolate that one gives it to the other with some illustration on the whiteboard.

Activity 4 (30 min) Watching a Japanese Warmhearted Story

I briefly introduce the story in the class and give them some questions which the students need to pay attention to while watching it. Then, we watch the whole story together in the class. After that, we review about the summary of that story together in the class by asking them questions and getting the answers in the class. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3r7izr

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Powerpoint

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

The class was successful in general. Today’s topic did help a lot the class be more productive and interactive. Basically, I was able to lead the class as planned, conducting each activity in an appropriate order. The story that we have watched in the class today was also relevant to their level of Japanese, so it seems to me that they understood the story very well. However, I found some parts needed to be revised.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

The PowerPoint I used today was simple, so I can put more photos in the slides, which makes it creative.  By doing so, it would be also a good help for their understanding when they get lost during the class. Before watching the short story in the class, I need to give the students basic background of the story such as main character, key points, and new vocabulary, which would motivate the students to watch it with those views. Also, I need to clarify well about the activity after watching it.

 Goal of the class:

Students will be able to express their ideas and opinions in the class.

How did you structure the class?

Activity 1 (10 min): Attendance check & Announcement & Warm-up

I check students’ attendance and give them announcements. Then, I casually ask the students about their updates and news, leading small conversation in the class.

Activity 2 (5 min): Introduction of the Game

I briefly introduce about Sekiggae, one of the exciting school events in Japan. And then I give them a handout and introduce the game in the class. Also, I explain about the situation to the students.

Activity 3 (20 min): Consensus Game 1 (Where is my seat??)

Students are given pieces of information cards and look at them and read them on their own. And then I explain a couple of rules on the game to the students. When they are ready, students stand up and talk with one another exchanging information with classmates in order to complete the game. They write down the answers on the whiteboard. And I check them out at the end.

Activity 4 (25 min): Consensus Game 2 (Drawing a map)

I briefly explain the game in the class and give the students pieces of information card. The students read them on their own. When they are ready, students stand up and talk with one another exchanging information with classmates in order to complete the map activity. They draw the map on the whiteboard. And I check it out at the end.

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Powerpoint

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

The class was successful in general. And students loved the activities I prepared. They spoke a lot in the class in order to work on the activities. I conducted this kind of consensus activities for the first time, but it went well. I have two more classes left this semester, so I am going to try this type of activity again in the next class on Monday.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

Everything was perfect in the class today. The students engaged a lot and participated in the activities. They were also motivated to working on the activities. Overall, today’s class was, needless to say, wonderful. Students really liked it as I did. I will teach them two more times through the semester, and I am so excited to teach them in the class.

JA S17 ADV “Disney & Japanese Film”

Language Resident Name: Yohichi Tagami

Day and Date: Thursday, February 9, 2017

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): Advanced Japanese

Class theme/topics discussed: Disney & Japanese Film

Goal of the class:

The students will be able to describe a story of film.

How did you structure the class?

Activity 1 (5 min) Attendance check and Announcement

I check students’ attendance and give them announcements.

 Activity 2 (15 min) Warm-up

I casually ask them about the movie they have watched recently. I make pairs in the class and they talk about it with their partner sharing it each other. I ask them about their favorite movie and to introduce it in the rest of the class. Also, I introduce about my movie and explain the story of it. After that, students introduce the story of film in the class and others guess which movie it is.

Activity 3 (30 min) Let’s describe a movie

I will demonstrate the activity in front of the class. I pick up a card on the table which has an image of Disney film on it. Then I introduce about the story of that movie to the students without saying the title of movie, names of characters, and they guess it by writing down the name on the paper given. Then, we talk about some techniques when explaining about the story to the others. Also, we review the points and rules for the activity together in the class, and students try to present their film in the class.

 Activity 4 (10 min) Let’s become a director

I make pairs in the class and they are given a poster of Japanese film. Students guess the story with their partner and make a short story on another paper. After that, each group shows the poster in the class and introduces the story that they have created in the class. We also watch the trailers of those films together and think of the story again in the class if possible.

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Powerpoint

What worked well in this class? What did not work?
The class was good in general. But the tasks I gave the students today seemed to be not challenging for them but too easy, because all the students knew the Disney film more than I did. So I tried to make differences and to let them practice in more relevant way, but it wasn’t going well as I expected. However, I have some solutions against that issue right now, so I would like to try the activity in that way next time, giving them a task to make a whole story in the class.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

I think I can divide a story of film for the number of students in the class and give each student a task to make a short story about that situation by referring to the photo given. Then the students prepare for their own part on their own and in the end we can combine them together by having them introduce their part one by one in front of the class. By doing so, the students are given a certain task and work hard on their own. Also, I can let them play in the class in target language, which sounds interesting, too.

ES S17 ADV Spanish Proverbs

Language Resident Name: Joaquin Garcia

Day and Date: 02/14/2017

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): Advanced Class

Class theme/topics discussed: Spanish proverbs

Goal of the class: Students get to learn expressions and proverbs which are commonly used in Spain and other Latin-American countries.

How did you structure the class?

Heads-up: upcoming cultural activities

Activity 1: We watch a couple of videos about Spanish sayings and we comment them openly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DCaFtr262k

Activity 2: I put students in little groups and I distribute Spanish proverbs, however, each of them is separated into two parts. Students in the groups must match up the proverbs.

Grupo A

A quien madruga,

Dios le ayuda

No dejes para mañana

lo que puedas hacer hoy

Más vale pájaro en mano

que ciento volando

Mala hierba

nunca muere

Ande yo caliente,

ríase la gente

Grupo B

No por mucho madrugar

amanece más temprano

Más vale tarde

que nunca

Quien no arriesga,

no gana

No hay mal

que cien años dure

Allí donde fueres,

haz lo que vieres

Activity 3: Some of the proverbs mean the exact opposite things as others. Students must stand up and try to find those proverbs.

Grupo A

Ejercicio.

1. No por mucho madrugar amanece más temprano

2. Más vale tarde que nunca

3. Quien no arriesga, no gana
4. No hay mal que cien años dure

Activity 4: I distribute one more proverb to each student and they have to describe it to the rest of the class.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/jameschapman/spanish-proverbs-translated-literally-into-english?utm_term=.uy48k325LL#.tfeeOXRzKK

Activity 5: In pairs, they must act a situation and use the proverb correctly in front of the rest of the class.

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Laptop, hands-out, youtube.

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

How could this class be improved/ modified?

They loved to learn this kind of vocabulary, specially the last list of proverbs and acting them out. Plus, it was a good training for the Open House activity. I definitely recommend this class.

ES S17 INT Descriptions and hypothesis

Language Resident Name: Tamara Olivos

Day and Date: April 24, 2017

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): Intermediate Spanish

Goal of the class:

To learn vocabulary through games

How did you structure the class?

Activity 1: Predicting the future: As context I talk about the ancient book I Ching and how people used it to learn more about the future. Each student has to ask a question about their future (simple things like Will I find a good job for example). Then, they consult this sacred book called the dictionary. Without looking, they open a random page and select 1 word. They must read the word and it’s description and try to decipher the message, how can this mysterious word relate to my question? They will do this with the help of the class. (for more detail instructions see the link below)

Activity 2: Descriptions: Using the set of cards in the link below, students must describe the pictures using some basic structures correctly like ser, estar, tener. This activity will definitely bring up a lot of new vocabulary.

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Dictionary (not online), printed cards.

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

The first activity also worked great with my advanced class (actually even better because they could create more complex hypothesis)

If you have a more detailed lesson plan, please attach it below (OK to use target language for that).  Please attach any handouts as well.

DE S17 INT Zoo plan cooperation game

Conversation Class Lesson Summary

Language Resident Name: Martin Siebert

Day and Date: Wednesday, February 1, 2017

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): German Intermediate Conversation

Class theme/topics discussed:

Zoo plan cooperation game.

Goal of the class:

Students learn or recap vocabulary (animals) and cooperate to solve a small riddle.

How did you structure the class?

5-10 minutes: Vocabulary quiz. The LR shows the students a power point with pictures of different animals in a quick sequence. The students write down the animals’ names if they know them. After the sequence the students compare; the student with the most correct vocabulary wins.

25 minutes: Zoo plan. The students receive a plan of a zoo with different enclosures and the respective animals living in it. They are handed out a plan and slips with the different animals on it and work together in groups. Following a few rules they have to come up with a new layout that regards all these and decide on new animals for the zoo, too.

20-25 minutes: Sentence starters. Students draw a slip of paper from a box. The slip contains a sentence starter. They have to complete the sentence and provide some more details (a few sentences) to reveal something about themselves. The other students are welcome to ask questions.

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

Pictures of different animals on the TV screen, Zoo plan layouts, animal paper slips, printed rules of the game, sentence starter paper slips.

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

Students liked the initial vocabulary quiz and enjoyed the sometimes very simple compound words that are used in German as the animals’ names. The zoo-plan layout game worked quite well, students cooperated and talked much. The sentence starter game is a good way to have people reveal interesting things about themselves.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

Good class, would keep it as it is.

Conversation Class Lesson Summary

Language Resident Name: Martin Siebert

Day and Date: Thursday, November 16, 2016

Language and Level (intermediate or advanced class): German Intermediate Conversation

Class theme/topics discussed:

The N.A.S.A. game.

Goal of the class:

Students express priorities, and reason in order to persuade others and reach a common goal.

How did you structure the class?

60 minutes: N.A.S.A. game. Students are given a scenario (moon landing) and a list of items they can use in order to reach their goal, which is to survive and get to the moon base. First, they rate the different items regarding to the importance by themselves. Afterwards they start discussing about their ratings with their partners (there need to be at least two smaller groups). Because they are a group, they have to come to unanimous decisions as a whole, too. There can be no majority votes (just in extreme cases), they need to persuade or to be persuaded. In the end, the LR reveals the official N.A.S.A. solutions to the group.

What technology, media or props did you use? (internet resources, playmobiles, handouts, etc.)

The N.A.S.A. game list, prepared sheets.

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

Students discussed a lot! Very good game.

How could this class be improved/modified?

Perfect conversation class exercise.
