The in-depth analysis and discussion of juvenile delinquency went on well in this class, since the students found they’re confident and fluent in talking about complicated social issues in Chinese. They made great progress in my conversation class this semester.

  • To guide students on how an individual makes a difference in protecting the environment.

How did you structure the class?

  1. Ask the students to brainstorm anything related to environment;
  2. Introduce some Chinese terms about environmental pollution and protection, and ask them to guess the meanings or paraphrase those terms in simple Chinese;
  3. Serve as a facilitator and divide them into several groups. Give 10 minutes to them for group discussion about key environmental issues in the world;
  4. Invite them to report to the whole class;
  5. Give them an in-depth analysis on the causes and consequences of environmental pollution, and provide a few feasible suggestions on how to protect the environment as a student:

The students liked to talk about environmental issues, since global issues of this kind can get the students more involved in discussion. They really wanted to do as much as they can to protect the environment. The discussion and in-class analysis worked very well in this class.

  1. Ask the students to discuss about the American educational systems, including the subjects they take in elementary school, middle school, high school, and college/university;
  2. Introduce some new & advanced words/expressions about education for their group discussion;
  3. Distribute the handouts and ask them to analyze educational differences between these two countries from a wide range of perspectives;
  4. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese & American educational systems;
  5. Wrap up.

The students are keen on educational differences between these two countries, and they want to take the positive sides of these two educational systems for their future self-development. So the discussion went on very well in the class.

  1. Warm-up question for the students: Did you or your family rent an apartment/house in the U.S.? How was your renting experience?
  2. Teach the students some useful words and expressions for renting;
  3. Introduce in great detail how to rent an apartment in China;
  4. Talk about how to find a nice roommate if one has to share an apartment/a house;
  5. Ask the students to discuss some renting issues/scenarios they may encounter and try to figure out their solutions;

The students liked to talk about their renting experience and the real issues they came across. When they described those actual issues, they used some English as it’s challenging for them to depict those scenarios in Chinese.

Brainstorming worked well in this class, since the students were very active in coming to the front to write down the stereotypes they held on white board. Besides, they loved to understand those stereotypes through discussion with me (a native Chinese) after watching the videos.

Some stereotypes about the Chinese:

  • Chinese people are only good at math and science;
  • Chinese restaurants serve cats and dogs;
  • Chinese people look alike/exactly the same;
  • Chinese women are inferior and subordinate to men;
  • Chinese people are not allowed to be Christians;
  • Chinese people are very quiet and introverted;
  • Chinese people can ride bicycles, but can’t drive;
  • Chinese people eat everything that moves;
  • Everything “made in China” is fake;
  • Chinese people know how to play Kung Fu;
  • All Chinese names are difficult to pronounce;
  • There are only two famous actors in China: Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan;
  • When you see an Asian on the street, he/she must be Chinese;
  • Chinese is the most difficult language in the world;
  • Cantonese is the official language of China;
  • Chinese people are traditional and conservative;
  • Chinese people think money can buy anything;

The students were crazy about Chinese food and they really enjoyed talking about it. They thought it’s very useful to know Chinese dining culture and they have already known what to do at Chinese table. Everything went smoothly in this class.

No. (I will invite my students to make Chinese dumplings in my apartment next time.)

How did you structure the class?

  1. Help the students recall what they have known about shopping in Chinese (brainstorming);
  2. Introduce some new words and expressions about shopping in China, and ask them to discuss merits and demerits of shopping in different places;

Brainstorming and role play worked very well, because almost all of them have been to China, and they are really interested in shopping there. Besides, they loved the funny videos and the role play in class, since they could easily put those useful expressions into daily practice.

Students’ personal stories about travelling and my recommendations on some tourist attractions worked well in this class. Some of them are quite excited to visit China next summer.

Some Chinese words about travel are difficult to intermediate learners, which I should explain more and translate into English next time.

3) Role play: One student will a travel agent, the other one is customer. They will use the new words we just learnt to practice and talk about their needs

What worked well in this class? What did not work?
Students talked a lot during the warm up activity. Also they used new words to practice.

How could this class be improved/ modified?
I should count time for the 20 questions warm up activity because one student is always slow. Other students had to wait for her.
