RU F12 INT White lies; students & cheating

Language and Section: Russian Intermediate

 Date:  09/13/12

Class theme/topics discussed: White lie; Students and cheating

 Goal of the class:

–        to practice description, argumentation and presentation

–        to compare Russian, American and Italian contexts regarding the topic

 Structure of the class:

–        Asking students how they understand an expression “white lies”; introducing vocabulary of the topic

–        Group work (each team get a sheet of paper with white lies; they should rate how bad is each situation coming to a common conclusion)

–        Discussing the results with the whole class, talking about controversial opinions and cultural differences

–        Students giving examples of their white lies and most common white lies of the nation they represent; most common white lies in Russia

–        Talking about students and cheating (Students had to guess what was a little paper with formulas, it was shpargalka – cribs. They discussed where one could hide it. Then we talked about how students cheat in Russia, the USA and Italy. Students told about their experience with cheating)

What technology, media or props did you use? (satellite tv, internet resources, playmobiles, etc.)

–        A sample of cribs

–        Handouts with white lies situations

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

The students really enjoyed the topic. They were willing to speak and stand for their opinion. In general, they were negative about cheating but they also told that sometimes white lies are necessary. So everything worked well.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

If the teacher had time, it would be nice to show funny videos about white lies or students and cheating.

Date: 2 February 2012

Class theme/topics discussed: Education

Goal of the class:

To practice speaking skills; to exchange opinions on the topic; to learn new vocabulary connected with education systems in the USA and Russia

Structure of the class (unless you attach your lesson plan below):

1) Discussion of the USA education system: students agree who explains which part of the system and talk about it in front of the class, using the whiteboard if needed;
2) Discussion of the Russian education system: first students explain what they already know, then I explain the rest if they have questions;
3) Follow up discussion: comparing the US and Russian systems – what is better/worse in Russia then in the USA and vice versa;
4) Where did you apply apart from Claremont Colleges? Where were you admitted? Why did you choose Claremont?
5) What is the procedure for college application? What is a personal statement? What do people write there? What did you write and you applied?

What technology, media or props did you use? (satellite tv, internet resources, playmobiles, etc.)

None

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

Everything worked very well. Students spoke a lot. I usually use video in almost every class, but here we have a lot to speak about and didn’t really need any specific tasks/activities, though I would probably use something if I do this class again.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

I would add some more specific activity to this lesson plan. Probably it’s a good idea to divide students into two groups (Russian and American) and ask them to argue why their system is better then the others’ one.

Please attach your lesson plan and handouts for this class below – if you used any.

– After the students finished, we discussed the pros and cons of the system, as well as going into the reasoning behind some of its most baffling aspects.

What technology, media or props did you use? (satellite tv, internet resources, playmobiles, etc.)

– Whiteboard

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

– Both the task and the discussion worked very well, and the students became very engaged.

ES F11 INT/ADV Stereotypes

Language and Section:  Intermediate Spanish 01

stereotypes

Date:  13.September.2011

Class theme/topics discussed: Stereotypes I

Goal of the class: Making students talk about stereotypes. These are very common nowadays so it is something familiar for students. At first we talked about stereotypes closer to them (school, university) and then we moved onto more general ones (social stereotypes, between men and women…).

Structure of the class (unless you attach your lesson plan below):

We started up with a warm-up, Pictionary (vocabulary related to the previous class). After that we moved onto the stereotypes. They had to come up with as much stereotypes as possible for Spain and I would write them down on the board. Then we did the same with stereotypes for the US. Afterwards I showed them a video of some Spanish stereotypes and explained a little bit since they didn’t understand everything. We talked about other stereotypes, e.g. between men and women and also stereotypes of kids in school.

What technology, media or props did you use? (satellite tv, internet resources, playmobiles, etc.)

.ppt and a video from youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0nGKN_64T8&feature=related

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

I think they liked the fact that they had to come up with ideas to find stereotypes for Spain and the US. And they also liked to learn some “slang” vocabulary to define some characters in the school, e.g. “coqueta”, “ligón”, “empollón”, “bonachón”…

How could this class be improved/ modified?

I could’ve also had them working in pairs or little groups and discuss about some of the main stereotypes of Spain and the US.

Please attach your lesson plan and handouts for this class below – if you used any.

DE S10 ADV Poems 1

Conversation Class Lesson Plan

Section: Advanced Conversation
Date: February 25, 2010

Class theme/topics discussed: German poems

How did you pick this theme or topic?
The “Musikabend”, an event hosted by the Scripps German and Music Department, was coming up soon, and my students wanted to take part in this by reciting a poem. Thus, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about famous German poems and to learn how to recite them.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
At first, I asked my students if they knew any German poems. They did know a few and I asked them to summarize and analyze them as well as they could. Then, I handed out three pages with popular German poems, ranging from Goethe to Morgenstern to Fried. We read each poem, talked about vocabulary, discussed the meaning of the poems and the author’s intentions. At the end, I asked each student to pick their favorite poem, explain why it’s their favorite and try to recite it to the rest of the class as good as possible. Myself and the other students gave feedback.

How did students react?
I think the students liked talking about the poems, although some of them were rather dated and did not have any kind of reference to them, I think.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they did. At first, they were a little shy while reading out the poems, but the further the lesson progressed, the more comfortable they got. They asked a lot of vocabulary questions and seemed quite interested in most of the poems.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Copies of poems (from 18th – 20th century)

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, I think you can integrate poems into a conversation class very well. I think I’d spend even more time on choosing the ‘right’ poems for my class next time to keep them interested and motivated.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
My students preferred to start working on the project early.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

In the next few classes, my student did research about Pomona College, we visited different places on campus, talked to students and professors, made notes and wrote little texts, videotaped my student’s performance, and edited everything until we had his final project. This process took about 3 weeks.

How did students react?
My student was very excited to work on the project. Since he is a Pitzer student, it was interesting for him to find out and learn about Pomona. He worked very well and independently.

DE S10 ADV Stereotypes1

Conversation Class Lesson Plan

Section: Advanced Conversation
Date: January 21, 2010

Class theme/topics discussed: Stereotypes about Germans and Germany

How did you pick this theme or topic? I thought it was a good way to start talking about Germany and to see what impressions they might have of Germans and Germany.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

I put about 10 different flashcards with pictures of German stereotypes (e.g. Bratwurst, Dirndl & Lederhosen, Mercedes & VW) on the table and asked the students to each chose one and say what they can see on the picture and what it might have to do with Germans / Germany. The students quickly guessed that those were all stereotypes. I asked them about their experiences and what they thought about those stereotypes. I had prepared three pieces of paper saying ‘Stimmt oft’, ‘Stimmt manchmal’ and ‘Stimmt gar nicht’ and asked the students to put the flashcards on either one of the papers to say whether they believed they are mostly true, sometimes, and not at all. I also asked them to say why they thought so, this way we had a very lively discussion.
At the end of the class I asked the students, if they knew any stereotypes about the Claremont Colleges and they told me about stereotypes of each of the five colleges.

How did students react?
The students seemed to like the activities very much and were eager to tell their impressions and their experiences about certain stereotypes. They were laughing a lot and seemed to enjoy the topic.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they talked a lot with each other and we had a lively discussion. They were also very interested in my opinion and wanted to know, if those stereotypes were really true or not.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Flashcards of German stereotypes (Flashcards are printed and in my ADV conversation folder).

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, definitely. The students were very motivated and eager to share their thoughts and experiences.

Firstly, I asked my student what she thought about studying abroad – why does she want to do that, when, where, how long, etc. Then I showed her some reviews of students who went abroad and we talked about their experiences. Afterwards the student asked me some general questions about studying in Germany and the German university system. At the end of the lesson I asked my students to think about why so few students want to go to Germany to study and how we / one could change that.

How did students react?
My student was very interested and even stayed 15 min longer after the class ended to finish our conversation.

Did they engage with each other and you?
