Lesson Plan

Section: Advanced Conversation
Date: 19. November 2009

Class theme/topics discussed: Music in Germany

How did you pick this theme or topic? The students had told me earlier that they were interested in German music and bands, so I thought it might be interesting to talk about this topic with them.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
First of all, I asked the students about their music taste and if they did some sort of music themselves. Then I asked them about their knowledge of German bands, songs, and music in general and their opinion on it. Afterwards, I put 10 flashcards on the table which had pictures of 10 different German singers / bands from the 80s until 2009 on them (Herbert Groenemeyer, Marius Mueller-Westernhagen, Die Toten Hosen, die Aerzte, Xavier Naidoo, Tokio Hotel, Culcha Candela, Sportfreunde Stiller). Next to that I put 10 flashcards with the respective names, 10 cards with song titles and 10 cards with dates on them. I told my students that they were supposed to match each singer / band with their name, their most famous song and the year of that song. To help them do this, I showed them all the songs on youtube. Although this was quite challenging, the students got most of it right. Afterwards I had them glue everything on a large poster and name it “Musik in Deutschland”. As a last activity, I asked my students to write a short German poem / song using the song titles we had listened to before.

How did students react?
The students were very interested and seemed to have fun. They wrote down some of the singers they liked, because they said they wanted to listen to them at home.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they talked a lot. Especially when they working together on matching all the songs, dates, names with the respective singers or bands.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Flashcards of bands / singers, names, song titles, dates
Computer + youtube videos
Large blank poster

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, I would use this activity again. The students seemed to like it and they had fun working on it. I might change the number of bands / singers though.. maybe to the 5 or 6 most popular ones.

Class theme/topics discussed: Reisen nach Deutschland

How did you pick this theme or topic? We had the ‘Kaffee and Kuchen’ the week before and talked about the city of Berlin. My students said they would like to talk more about Berlin and other big cities in Germany.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
Only one student came today. I talked to her about her knowledge of German geography and she told me about her visits to Germany. We looked at a map of Germany and talked about big cities, what they are famous for, and why people might like to travel there. Then, I asked my student to design a poster of a German city she liked and include some fun facts that would motivate young people to visit that city. At the end of the lesson we talked about how to motivate students to travel to Germany and how Germany could improve their advertisement so that more young people would travel there.

How did students react?
My student was very interested and seemed to like the topic. She also enjoyed working on the poster.

DE F09 ADV Fall of the Wall

Conversation Class Lesson Plan

Section: Advanced Conversation
Date: 10. November 2009

Class theme/topics discussed: The fall of the Berlin Wall

How did you pick this theme or topic? This lesson was one of the last ones before the German Special Dinner, which will be centered on the fall of the Berlin Wall. So I thought it might be interesting for my students to learn and talk a little bit about how the Berlin Wall was built, separated Germany and then finally fell.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I asked the students about their knowledge of the Berlin Wall and how it came down in 1989. Then, I handed them an article about the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which we read and discussed. I asked them some more questions (e.g. “Do you think everyone was happy that the Wall fell?” or “Do you think it is possible that there might be another Wall sometime in the future?”) and the students discussed these quite lively. Then, I told them about the upcoming German Special Dinner and my ideas for it. I told them that we would like to have bricks on every table to represent pieces of the Berlin Wall and that they could draw on these bricks. I handed out 4 bricks to them (2 each) and pens and my students started drawing. Meanwhile we were talking about the German Dinner.

How did students react?
At first, the students did not seem very excited about the topic, maybe because they are not especially interested in German history. But later in the lesson, when I asked them about their ideas for painting the ‘Wall’ and when we started to paint the bricks, the students had a lot of fun.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes. More in the second activity.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Article on the Berlin Wall
Slideshow on computer
Bricks

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, I would. But I would try to make the theoretic part of this lesson more interesting.

ES F09 ADV Mafalda Comic

Conversation Class
Lesson Plan

Section: ADVANCED SPANISH, SPAN013

Date: 10/27/2009

Class theme/topics discussed:
THE WORLD THROUGH MAFALDA’S EYES.
Mafalda, the most famous Argentinean comic stripe. Argentinean words and humor.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
The topics of the comic stripes deal with the world and its problems, so it is very general and everyone can talk about that. Also, I wanted them to know this famous Argentinean character and comic stripe which has been translated to 30 languages and which is really funny.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I gave them flashcards with 20 comic stripes. Every student had to pick up one and explain the joke on it plus give their comments about the topic of the stripe. This made all of them to give their point of view and opinion about each of the topics. Then, they needed to write down what they think some empty stripes could say and explain those ones too.

How did students react?
They commented on them but they were not very enthusiastic.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes. They spoke in couples and in individual turns.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
20 flashcards with different comic stripes.

Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes.

Why or why not?
It gives students the opportunity to talk about all different topics dealt with in the comic stripes, but they were not very motivated.

16th Class ADV

FR F09 ADV – Translation of a poem

Translation of Victor Hugo’s poem “Demain, Dès l’Aube”

How did you pick this theme or topic?

One student from this group is going to recite a poem for the French Dinner, so I thought it would be nice to have the other students translate it so that everyone could understand it during the Dinner. And it would also be a way to make them take part in it.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

Work in two groups and then group discussion

How did students react?

They reacted well, but they spoke mainly English since it was a translation from French to English. However, I think they liked it because it was a bit different from what we had been doing.

Did they engage with each other and you?

They engaged with each other and discussed the best ways to translate the lines.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)

Youtube,
Handouts

Please attach a copy.

Below is the plan I had with me in class

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Not for a regular conversation class because it didn’t involve French.

Advanced 10/15

1. Warm-up

2. Workshop: Victor Hugo’s poem “Demain, Dès l’Aube”

– Jenna introduces it
– They read the text in French
– They listen to the way it should be recited (youtube video)
– Explanation of some terms

3. Translation

– they work in two groups: each group translate a part of the poem
– then they switch what they translated and correct the other part they didn’t translate
– then they all talk about the problematical translations

FR S09 INT/ADV – Comics and tongue-twisters

How did you pick this theme or topic?

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I had a documents with tongue twisters and I had them read them. They did a good job. They had a lot of questions
I asked them if they knew French “BD” They did not. I showed them pictures of Asterix, Les Schtroumpfs, Titeuf…
Then I gave them a page of a BD and they had to imagine the dialogues. It was funny. They tried to adapt to the language and the style.

How did students react?
We had fun with both activities

Did they engage with each other and you?

yes

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)

FR S08 INT – skit and text

End of the skit of last week. “J’aime pas les filles”
“Le croissant du trottoir”

How did you pick this theme or topic?
We needed to follow up on last week’s activity.
“le croissant du trottoir” is a very cute text. It is a good reading exercice, and then they talk about their personal experience.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I asked them about the list of things that the comedian does not like about boys, then I asked them to imagine what she could reproach women for doing.
We checked by watching the video.
Text: I gave them the text, introduced it. ( author, entire book, because this text is one of more than 30) Then they read it and ask for the words they did not know. I asked them a few questions like: what is the tense most used in the text? Why? What is the personal pronoun most used? Why?…
Then I asked them if like the author, they feel the same kind of feelings sometimes, and when.

How did students react?
The skit was fun to watch and talk about but a little hard again.
They liked the text, especially when they could share their personal experience. It was really cute.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Handouts, youtube

FR F08 INT – Art

Game for vocabulary
Art, masterpieces

How did you pick this theme or topic?
This worked well last year

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

Game: I gave them a letter, and in turn, they had to come up with a word starting with this letter. (see interm class)
I had printed out paintings, and names of painters, and the names of those paintings, but on separate sheets.
First, I gave them one or 2 paintings each. Then, I put titles in the middle, and they had to come pick the name of their painting.
Then I put the names of artists in the middle, and they had to come pick up the names of the artists.
Then I told them that I had 7 “families” and 14 paintings, so they had to find their “half” among the other paintings, and find the name of the movement (cubism…)
Then I asked them, in pairs, to choose on of the paintings, and describe it to the class ( I gave them 3 minutes to do it)
Finally, I told them to imagine a crazy story related to what was going on in the paintings ( they had all chosen a painting with characters). They had to give names to the characters, and invent relationships…

How did students react?

Very well, they loved it! And they knew a lot about art. They guessed almost everything, and they were quite inventive when they had to make up a story

Did they engage with each other and you?

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Paintings and printouts.
Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
DEFINITELY

FR S08 INT – Vocabulary game, comic strips and skits

Game for vocabulary.
Comic strips and skits.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
Comic strips are a good way of expressing something without too many words. It is a good exercise to practice efficient communication, and also , it is nice to have the students explain what they see.
The game for vocab is a game that I did with a friend of mine, in English, and I thought it was fun and surprising.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I gave them a letter, and, in turn, they had to say a word that starts with this letter. I left them one minute to think about as many words as possible before the games starts. Usually, it is an individual game, with limited time, but it can work for a group too. The funny thing is that they come up with words that they have never used before.
Comic strips: I presented a few examples of the most popular ones in France, after asking them if they knew any. Then I gave them empty pages and they had to invent the dialogues
3rd: I gave them magazines, and let them cut pictures of famous people, and then make up a story

How did students react?
They liked all the activities because they involved active creation, but bot only relied on their vocabulary. They had to use their imagination, which makes it more fun than just speaking about a given topic.

Did they engage with each other and you?
YES

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Copies of strip cartoons, magazines, projector and internet.

Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes
