Advanced Conversation
Lesson 2
September 2, 2010

1. News of the day.

2. Question-answer game:
There are two sets of paper stripes, a blue one with questions and a pink one with answers. One student chooses the student to reply and they simultaneously draw papers from two sets. Then they read out loud the question and the answer. If needed, translate.
The fun part is that the q-s and answers often doesn’t match – but they are designed to create funny combinations.

3. Board game
Play as a regular board game – throw a dice, move the figure on the board, answer the corresponding question.

JP S10 INT/ADV Who is telling the truth?

Class theme/topics discussed:
うそみたいな本当の話(Group Work)
Evaluation for Conversation Class ( I finished 15 mins earlier than usual to fill out the evaluations)

How did you pick this theme or topic?
うそみたいな本当の話-We did similar things before early in this semester. This time, I divided into 2 groups, and they have to tell their unreliable stories to peer in their group. Then, students need to pick up one person who was going to tell the truth. The rest of others needed to tell a lie. After that students had to tell their stories to other group(they were audience in this time) Another team have to guess who was telling the truth.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

How did students react?
They looked tired, but they reacted very well. Some students were out of focus today…

Did they engage with each other and you?
I think so.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
n/a

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
YES

Why or why not?
This time, they looked so tired to take a class. ( I think it was because of final exams or writing paper…) But, they engaged with each other, and they asked me a lot of questions.

JP S10 INT/ADV Fuck My Life

Class theme/topics discussed:
Fuck My Life

How did you pick this theme or topic?
Anastasia gave me this idea for advanced class. She told me FML was so much fun to discuss.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
1) Asked students meaning of “Fuck My Life” in Japanese
2) I gave them the translation for it. 『死ぬかと思った』
3) Let students explain the meaning of “I agree, your life sucks” “you totally deserved it”
4) Students picked up a slight of paper
5) Students need to summarize the sentence what they said on it.
6) We discussed why you agreed or not.

How did students react?
They enjoyed doing FML and they discussed a lot the topics which they chose. Actually, I really enjoyed doing FML!

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they engaged very well. We laughed a lot with the topics that we shered.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
『Fuck My Life』 http://www.fmylife.com/tops/flop

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
YES!

Why or why not?

Everybody already knew this website! Once I said the word “Fuck My Life”, they started laughing at what I said in English. They tried to translate to English to Japanese, and also their own summaries and translations for “fuck my life” story were very hilarious. We laughed a lot and discuss a lot about the topics. It was good excises to explain the material and discuss our opinion. Time flew very fast today! Also, that was good vocabs and phrase lesson!

→ they have to guess from what fairy tale the sentences comes from

• La fillette a bu la potion et est devenu très petite.
• La jeune fille s’est piqué le doigt et s’est endormie pour toujours.
• La jeune fille est tombée amoureuse de la Bete et a brisé le sortilège.

→ they have to create 3 sentences thanks to the vocabulary sheet and make us guess from what fairy tale it comes from

2. Fables de la Fontaine
→ they have to read the fables aloud
→ they say what they understand
→ we see together the words they don’t understand
→ then we read the English version
→ we discuss the meaning

Class theme/topics discussed: Creative story telling

How did you pick this theme or topic? The students had really enjoyed the previous lesson and working creatively, so I thought of another exercise, where they had to use their imagination a lot and create something new.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
To get my students’ imagination going, I played a game first. I put a sheet of paper on the table which showed a little guy, we called him Manni. I asked the students to describe Manni, think about what he might like to in his free time, what he likes to eat, where he works, etc. The students were supposed to work together while describing him: Each student was only supposed to say one word, and then the next student would continue the sentence and so on.
Then, I gave each student an ABC-list, which they were supposed to fill with German words starting with letters A-Z. After that, the students were supposed to share their words and write a story or dialogue, using as many words out of their lists as possible. Then, they presented their product.
Finally, we played a well-known game to end the lesson: 20 questions. Every student (one after another) was supposed to think of a German word and the other two were supposed to ask questions to guess the word.

How did students react?
The students love Manni! They had fun doing teamwork in order to describe him. They also liked to write their own story and present it.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they talked a lot. They seemed to have a lot of fun too.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Sheet of paper with ‘Manni’ picture
ABC list

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, I would. The first exercise could also be used at the end of lessons, if you need to fill a couple of minutes, because you can end this game whenever you want, there is no certain time range required.

Class theme/topics discussed: News in Germany

How did you pick this theme or topic? In the week before I had noticed that my students did not seem to know too much about what was going on in Germany a few years ago and even today. So I thought it might be interesting to talk about recent things that happened in Germany and how they are portrayed in the news.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
To start off, we played the game 2 truths and a lie. Then we talked about how easy it is to tell a lie and how people believe it. I asked my students if they thought that media can be like that too, i.e. that news shows or newspapers sometimes told lies or changed stories to a certain extent. We then talked about things that recently happened in Germany and how they were portrayed in the news, I showed my students a few articles from the Bild Zeitung for that purpose. Then, I asked my students to design their own front page of the Bild Zeitung. They were supposed to write 3 true stories on something they thought was interesting and 1 lie about something they made up. The students typed their stories into the computer and we printed their ‘own newspaper’.

How did students react?
The students enjoyed the game at the beginning of the lesson and they enjoyed working on their own newspaper. They did not seem very interested in the articles I had brought.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, the students talked a lot and raised some interesting questions. They were also very creative.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Articles from the Bild Zeitung
Blank draft of the Bild Zeitung in word file
Computer

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, the students had fun and they were very talkative. I would try to find different kinds of articles though.. maybe some that are more interesting to young students.

CN F09 INT/ADV Comic Strip Story

Class theme/topics discussed:

Comic Strip Story
How did you pick this theme or topic?
To ask students to practice describing pictures and then try to figure out the sequence of a story without looking each other’s pictures by discussing.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

Handouts, group work, open discussion

How did students react?

They love to describe pictures and a student plays a role as the sectary to take notes about what they said. It also make them have a good conversation while trying to figure out the sequence of the story.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
pictures

Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes
Why or why not?

It’s a good way to make conversation. However, it’s better to tell the sectary that he/she needs to write down each students’ name as well as their description. It would be easier for them to discuss the sequence by saying”Mary’s picture should be the first one or Tom’s picture should be the second one, etc…”

FR F09 INT/ADV – French and American stereotypes

French and American stereotypes

How did you pick this theme or topic?

Stereotypes are interesting because they make you think about the way nations see one another, and it’s rather easy to find activities around it and to make the students talk because they find it interesting.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

General discussion
Work in pairs
Handouts

How did students react?

They reacted well, they all had something to say and were very interested in the way French saw Americans. We talked about the positive and negative stereotypes, and they had a lot to say so it was easy to keep the discussion going.

Did they engage with each other and you?

Yes. They had to ask questions to each other, and then to talk about the video. And they also had to perform a short skit in groups of two or three so they had to engage with each other.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)

Handouts
youtube

Please attach a copy.
Below is the plan I had with me in class

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?

Yes, definitely.

Why or why not?

It was a very good way of making them speak.

Advanced 09/17

French and American stereotypes

1. Warm-up 5 min

2. Interviews in pairs
– What are the French stereotypes for them?
– What are the American stereotypes for them?
– Do you know other country stereotypes?

→ group discussion

3. Youtube video

→ French stereotypes in movies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4A8C5nRWTg

→ they need to write down all the stereotypes mentioned in the video

4. Brainstorming
– What do they think?
– Writing them all (video + brainstorming) on the white board in the right column: POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE

For Advanced:

5. Skit: French stereotypes – 10 min

Divisez la classe en paires et dites aux élèves que le défi est maintenant de préparer un sketch mettant en scène les stéréotypes Français courants, ils doivent choisir un des stéréotypes déjà discutés.

FR F09 ADV – famous French people

Famous French people

How did you pick this theme or topic?

I didn’t know who they knew or considered as famous in France so I thought it might be interesting to “test” their knowledge about famous people in France, and to make them discover famous French names (artists, sportsmen, etc…).

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

Group work
Game
General discussion

How did students react?

They reacted well, they knew many famous French people (some of them really knew a lot) but all did not know all the French people I introduced so they could learn more about them.

Did they engage with each other and you?

Yes. They tried to guess when they knew, and asked questions about the people they didn’t know. When each group had to confront the other for the final “contest”, they spoke a lot, found good arguments and replied to each other.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Computer (youtube), handout.

Please attach a copy.
Below is the plan I had with me in class.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes, I think they liked it and they were all able to participate in the discussion.

Advanced 09/10

Famous people in France

1) Warm-up: 5 min

2) 1st activity: 15 min

– I show some videos of famous people
– They need to find who they are

• Nicolas Sarkozy
• Edith Piaf
• George Brassens
• Serge Gainsbourg
• Johnny Hallyday
• Charles Aznavour
• Luc Besson
• Zinédine Zidane
• …

3) Jeu « Who Am I » 15 min

– Use some of the famous people discussed
– paper stuck on everyone’s forehead

Procedure: Have all the students stand up. Pin a paper to each forehead without the student seeing what is on it. Then tell the students that they must show their sign to other students in the class without trying to see it themselves.
– They should then ask the other students questions to determine who they are/what the word on their back is.
– Students may only ask yes/no questions.
– When someone answers “no” to their question, they need to ask someone else.
– The winner is the first one to finish, but the game may continue until everyone has figured out who they are.
– Finally, have the students tell the rest of the class who they are.

4) 3rd activity: 10 min

– they are in groups of 2 or 3

→ distribution of a longer paragraph on two famous French people
→ explanation of the words
→ need to fill in the blanks (they have different blanks so they need to read the paragraph aloud so that the others can fill in their blanks and vice versa)

– Georges Brassens: Brassens1 et Brassens2
– Serge Gainsbourg: Gainsbourg1 and Gainsbourg2

5) Award : 15 min

– they need to give a speech to be given the award for the best artist
– 5 min preparation

ES F09 INT/ADV Personal Relations Pets

Conversation Class
Lesson Plan

Section: INTERMEDIATE SPANISH, SPAN011

Date: 09/10/2009

Class theme/topics discussed:
Relation between animals and people.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
Since I decided to put two short movies this week, I thought that this activity from the previous LR would be great for today, of course, with some changes to adjust it to this particular class.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
Making use of a powerpoint I introduced the topic and made them answer some questions about their pets and the relation with animals. We talked about the use of the past in stories.
Later, they needed to write a story in little groups about what they thought was happening in the images and compare it with the original.

How did students react?
They liked the audiovisual material and really liked the idea of making a story out of that. Some of them were really shy but they liked working in groups. They made great stories and with only a few mistakes.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they did. They feel more comfortable when working in small groups.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Powerpoint, list of vocabulary and short movie (Ana y Manuel).

Please attach a copy.
See next page.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes, definitively.

Why or why not?
They enjoyed the topic. Also, everybody has or had a pet and they liked talking about them. They participated a lot.

DE F09 ADV Dialects

Conversation Class Lesson Plan

Section: Advanced Conversation
Date: 8. September 2009

Class theme/topics discussed: German dialects

How did you pick this theme or topic? I think it is important to know that not everyone in Germany speaks ‘Hochdeutsch’ and that there are numerous dialects.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I asked the students about their knowledge of German dialects, – they knew very little. Then I played five short audio files with conversations or songs in a certain dialect (Bayerisch, Berlinerisch, Kölsch, Hamburgisch und Sächsisch) and asked the students to guess which one was which. We talked about Berlinerisch for a bit and we read ‘Rotkäppchen’ in Berlinerisch. Then we talked about Turkish people in Germany and their accent / dialect. Then we read an exaggerated version of ‘Hänsel und Gretel’ in Turkish German. We talked about the way Turkish German sounds in that story and the way people might react, when they hear someone talk like that. Afterwards I asked the students to create a short dialogue or story together (there were 3 students), which we would later (next meeting) record on the computer in Hochdeutsch and Turkish German.

How did students react?
The students were very surprised about the different dialects, they knew very little. They enjoyed talking about Turkish German and were excited to create their own dialogue.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they did. Especially when working on the dialogue. They had a lot of ideas and wanted to write a longer and more complex story that I had asked of them.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Sound files on my laptop
My laptop
Documents: ‘Rotkäppchen’ and ‘Hänsel und Gretel’

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, the students had fun and were eager to work on the given exercise. I don’t know, if they learned a lot about the different dialects though, since we only talked about some of them very briefly. I also thought about showing them a youtube-video about Erkan & Stefan, but I don’t think they would have understood, because it was difficult for them to understand the different dialects (even if they were spoken rather slowly).

Hänsel und Gretel auf Kanakisch
Rotkäppchen auf Berlinerisch

FR F09 ADV – Music and song “Cendrillon” (Telephone)

Music :
– general discussion about music
– “Fill the blanks”
– Imagine the video of the song

How did you pick this theme or topic?

I think music is a fun way of tackling a foreign language because it is something universal, so even if they had never heard of the song, chances were that they liked music and thus found this class interesting. Music is also a nice way of learning about a country’s culture. And since I wasn’t really sure about their level, I chose a rather easy song to test it.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

General discussion
Group discussions (in groups of 3)
Handouts – lyrics of the song with blanks to be filled by the students

How did students react?

Really well, they all talked to each other for 10 minutes about music, French songs, etc…
As for the song, nobody knew it. They understood most of the lyrics, though.
And they had good ideas about what kind of video they would have made to go with the song.

Did they engage with each other and you?

Yes. All of them talked to each other and then tried to guess the lyrics, and suggested a possible video.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)

Computer (youtube), handout

Below are the lyrics of the song, and the plan I had with me in class.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes, I think they liked it and they were all able to participate in the discussion.

09/03 Advanced

1) warm up : 5-10mn
– qu’avez-vous fait depuis mardi ? etc…

2) Introduction of the topic:
– Do you know French music?
– French singers, bands?
→ they had to ask each other 4 questions about their favorite bands, singers, songs, etc…

3) Introduction of the song and the band
Téléphone bio

4) Song without the lyrics and without the video:

– I give them the lyrics with the blanks, they read it and ask for what they don’t understand.
– Song again, they have to fill in the blanks
– Correction and explanation (expressions)

questions to ask:
– Qu’est-ce qui est arrivé à Cendrillon ?
– Pourquoi ?
– Que se passe-t-il à la fin de la chanson ?

5) Try to imagine how you would create the video for this song

–> Discussion in groups and then comparison with each other’s ideas

FR F08 INT – Art

Game for vocabulary
Art, masterpieces

How did you pick this theme or topic?
This worked well last year

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

Game: I gave them a letter, and in turn, they had to come up with a word starting with this letter. (see interm class)
I had printed out paintings, and names of painters, and the names of those paintings, but on separate sheets.
First, I gave them one or 2 paintings each. Then, I put titles in the middle, and they had to come pick the name of their painting.
Then I put the names of artists in the middle, and they had to come pick up the names of the artists.
Then I told them that I had 7 “families” and 14 paintings, so they had to find their “half” among the other paintings, and find the name of the movement (cubism…)
Then I asked them, in pairs, to choose on of the paintings, and describe it to the class ( I gave them 3 minutes to do it)
Finally, I told them to imagine a crazy story related to what was going on in the paintings ( they had all chosen a painting with characters). They had to give names to the characters, and invent relationships…

How did students react?

Very well, they loved it! And they knew a lot about art. They guessed almost everything, and they were quite inventive when they had to make up a story

Did they engage with each other and you?

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Paintings and printouts.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
DEFINITELY

FR S08 INT – Vocabulary game, comic strips and skits

Game for vocabulary.
Comic strips and skits.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
Comic strips are a good way of expressing something without too many words. It is a good exercise to practice efficient communication, and also , it is nice to have the students explain what they see.
The game for vocab is a game that I did with a friend of mine, in English, and I thought it was fun and surprising.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I gave them a letter, and, in turn, they had to say a word that starts with this letter. I left them one minute to think about as many words as possible before the games starts. Usually, it is an individual game, with limited time, but it can work for a group too. The funny thing is that they come up with words that they have never used before.
Comic strips: I presented a few examples of the most popular ones in France, after asking them if they knew any. Then I gave them empty pages and they had to invent the dialogues
3rd: I gave them magazines, and let them cut pictures of famous people, and then make up a story

How did students react?
They liked all the activities because they involved active creation, but bot only relied on their vocabulary. They had to use their imagination, which makes it more fun than just speaking about a given topic.

Did they engage with each other and you?
YES

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Copies of strip cartoons, magazines, projector and internet.

Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes
