Lesson 12
February 24, 2011

1. News of the day.
February, 23d is a special day in Russia. What is it? (Какой праздник отмечают в России 23 февраля?) Write the official name of the holiday on the board. Ask them what it means. If they don’t know, introduce the words “Защитник/ защищать/ защита”, “Отечество”.
Give a short commentary on the history of the holiday – от большевиков до наших дней.
Ask students’ opinion on the idea of having a holiday like this.

2. On the board – a Russian saying (I introduced it by saying that February 23d is considered a very masculine holiday, so the saying we are about to discuss is also very «masculine» ☺ )
Баба с возу – кобыле легче.

Students are asked to translate it using a dictionary and try to guess the meaning.

3. Reading/ preparing to watch a video:
Introduce the video, say that it is a real анонс, but inform them that it is a joke – so that no one gets offended. It may be a good example of how political correctness functions in Russia.

(Handout Lesson 12_February 24_23 февраля ТВ анонс – текст)

Students read the text out loud, one by one, and translate it. We discuss the vocabulary, I point out the words that they need to memorize:

Определенно = точно
Изобрести / изобретение / изобретатель
Украшения
Гордиться (+ творит. падеж)
Глубоко в душе, в глубине души (+ comment on the English equivalent – as a rule, where English idiomatic expressions have the word HEART, in Russian it is ДУША, soul)
Какая разница – comment on two possible meanings depending on the intonation: 1) It doesn’t matter! / Forget it! / What’s the difference?.. 2) What a difference!
Особенный день
Канал
Передача

Looking for a job.

Then we brainstormed the vocabulary of unusual professions they did not know and finally they played a game in which they had to divide in groups, read the description of one job and the profiles of four candidates to the job in order to discuss which candidate was the most adequate one and why. It is a very good game which really worked.

How did students react?
It really worked. They liked to discuss which candidate was the best one for the position and they told crazy personal work stories.

Did they engage with each other and you?

Conversation Class Lesson Plan

Section: Advanced Conversation
Date: February 16, 2010

Class theme/topics discussed: In a restaurant

How did you pick this theme or topic? My students had told me that they would like to bake or cook something together, which I plan to do the following lesson. As an introduction I thought it might be interesting to talk about food in general and do this with the help of a role-play.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
First, I asked my students what they generally liked to eat and drink and what not so much. We had a lively discussion about American food and my students’ favorite dishes. We also talked about their favorite restaurants and great places to eat in the area around Claremont. Then, I suggested an exercise: Each student was supposed to impersonate a restaurant owner. They had to come up with a type of restaurant, a name for it, and their own menu with their favorite dishes. Then, we did different kinds of role plays, where the students would play customers, waiters, and chefs in their respective restaurants. The students practiced some restaurant-related small talk, they discussed the menus, they placed orders, and they gave feedback about the food they had ‘ordered’.

How did students react?
The students had a lot of fun were very creative when it came to their own menus. They also loved the role play.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, they were talking to each other very much and they learned some new, useful vocabulary.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Draft of menu

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, definitely. It is a great exercise to make your students talk and get creative.
