We read a short text for introduction together. After that we went to the FLRC and each student had to find out something about one party (when was it found, color, famous politian, goals). Lesson 4_Sept 9_Protests Presentation
Lesson 4_Sept 9_Video 1 _Стратегия 31 в Москве_
Lesson 4_Sept 9_Strategiya 31 TEXT
Lesson 4_Sept 9_Video Questions

Would you recommend this activity for a future class? Why or why not?
Yes, I would. It provides knowledge about the current events in Russia and gives students a chance to shape their own opinions on these issues. Probably additional questions for the discussion should be designed in order to facilitate participation. The language in the videos may be too challenging for the students, so suggest substantial guidelines and vocabulary from the task! (I offered only guidelines and SOME vocabulary, which apparently was not enough. So work with the texts/vocab from the videos more.)

Handouts, pair work, group work, general discussion

Why did you choose this topic?
Obama is a hot topic in China and recently a shop selling Oba-Mao T-shirt is shut down. CN F09 ADV Nobel Prize

Class theme/topics discussed:

Who is going to win the Nobel Peace Prize

How did you pick this theme or topic?

A controversial Chinese journalist Hu Jia is nominated as one of the Nobel Peace Prize nominees. At the same time, Barack Obama is also one of the nominees. It’s an interesting topic for students to discuss and learn something about Chinese journalism while also have something familiar (American political figures) to talk about.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)

Handouts(vocabulary list)
Video

How did students react?

Most of them like the topic and we had a great conversation. However, a few of them show littler interests in politics. Thus, I am going to keep this teaching mode but broaden my topics.

Yes

Why or why not?

Most students can learn something about Chinese politics and related taboos in mainland China. At the same time, they can also learn Chinese young people’s opinions by watching videos. It’s quite different from what they though, so they can make great conversation based on the differences.

FR S08 ADV – Presidential election

Discussion about the debates before the elections.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
Everyone is talking about the elections, the candidates, the debates so I thought that it would be a good idea to compare the two systems.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
I asked them questions about the debates in the US, how does it work, where they take place, how many they have…
I showed the French debate before the second round of the presidential elections in 2007 between Sarkozy and Royal. It was an oral comprehension exercise as well as a comparison between the American debates that they had watched.
They showed an excerpt of the French News on France 2 and did a “fill in the blank” exercise with the script I had written down. It gave them the opportunity to see what the French medias was thinking about the election.

How did students react?
They really liked it they all got involved in the discussion.

Did they engage with each other and you?
YES

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)

Practice Grammar and Syntax (15 min):
Game “Add a Word”: One student begins a sentence by saying only one word. A second student must say a word which continues the sentence. A third must continue, and so on, until someone says a word that does not fit syntactically or grammatically.

Topic “Politics”.
Beginning: “Выборы – это…”

FR F07 INT – article from “Le Monde”

Article from “Le Monde” about the recent riots in France.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
The students like to talk about current issues.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
Article, group reading (each student had a small part to read), after each part, they could ask questions, and I asked them to try to summarize what the article was about.

How did students react?
I think they found the article hard to understand, but little by little, they understood what was at stake, and since some of them had heard of a similar situation two years ago, it made sense to them. They even asked questions about the situation itself. I think that the best students enjoyed it, while the other ones just tried to get a general idea.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, each student had her ability to understand either the article, or the situation itself, so I got a variety of questions.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Article

Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class.
YES, I keep thinking that its important to work with real material

FR F07 INT – immigration issues

Amendment to a law in France, allowing the embassy to ask immigrants to do a DNA test to prove that they really want to join a relative in France, and not a random person.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
This amendment is highly controversial in France. It came out in the middle of September, and since then, it’s been on the newspaper every single day. People protest against it, concerts were organized… Immigration is a sensitive subject on which the new President wants to work a lot. This is a great topic to have the students think about a controversial issue, at the same time as it is coming out in France.

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
Newspaper article, reading and general discussion

How did students react?
I think the subject was really difficult. The vocabulary was not hard, but it was hard for them to express their ideas about something so specific. They were interested though, because this is concrete, this is reality.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes, even if some of them found it really hard, they tried to understand what was going on. Moreover, when they had an idea that they could express, they did so, and at the end of class, they all had a lot to say or to ask.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Article from “LeMonde” that I modified.

Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes, because the students are interested in the culture and issues of the Country. Immigration is also a topic that they are familiar with, so I would definitely do it again, even as a follow up of this particular class.

FR F07 INT – Suburbs and immigration issues

Suburbs and their problems. The Muslim veil, and laws in France…

How did you pick this theme or topic?
One of my students wanted to talk about something really cultural, and something that happened in my hometown made me think about talking about that

How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
General discussion, I wanted to see where we could end up, just by talking.

How did students react?
They liked the topic, because it is something that they’re used to. It was familiar

Did they engage with each other and you?
Only one student did not speak much. The others had heard of the problems, or had seen the movies from which I showed extracts, so they were interested in comparing both points of view. ( In France it’s forbidden to wear the veil in school) Starting from the same idea that there is diversity in both countries, why do they have completely different ways of solving the problems.

What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
You tube.

Please attach a copy.

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes, the students are always interested in things they can identify with, in the other culture.
