How did you pick this theme or topic?
It is a well-known Spanish tradition and it served as an introduction for the topic of the first Study Break: Spanish gastronomy. Las tapas.

I used a hand out to brainstorm vocabulary and a hand out with three conversation games about food.

How did students react?
Students liked the game. All of them are familiar with the food of any Spanish-speaking country because all of them lived in a Spanish-speaking country last year.

Yes. They talked a lot and they enjoyed the games.

How did you pick this theme or topic?
It is very interesting since we all hear Spanglish everyday and it is linguistically controversial to some extent

I gave students a newspaper article on Spanglish to comment on it and hear their opinions about the usefulness and linguistic accurateness of Spanglish. I gave them different examples of Spanglish and they had to guess the meaning in Spanish. Finally they had to answer some question on the topic

How did students react?
They found it interesting since they are all familiar with it and they all knew some -American Latino friend who spoke Spanglish and they liked to talk about personal anecdotes with the use of Spanglish or about some celebrities who speak Spanglish

Yes.

A newspaper article, examples of Spanglish and a sheet of questions

Yes, because it is interesting, but it may be a bit difficult for the intermediate group. They need some help.

I brought a map of Granada with different areas and different real posts for housing. I also created 5 profiles for people looking for an apartment and they had to match it.

I brought some Cvs and job offers, so some people would be the interviewers and others would be the interviewees, then they had 5 minutes to convince the other person that they were the appropriate person for the job.

First I asked students general questions about love and about any fun Saint Valentine anecdote. Then we wrote valentines to send them to other people in the class.

They liked it a lot and they made up very good valentine cards.

A general overview on two different Spanish countries through travel and tourismo: Mexico and Costa Rica

How did you pick this theme or topic?
I thought it would help them to understand the diversity of the Spanish Speaking countries and to arise some interest in them.

How did you present the material? (handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
First I gave them an introductory worksheet with questions about traveling which they had to discuss in pairs.
Second we revised a list of vocabulary useful for the topic of traveling and tourism
Third, I grouped students in small groups and gave them two different worksheets with information about Mexico and Costa Rica. They had to read it and brainstorm all they know about these countries. Then they talked among themselves to design a tour around these countries and reading it out loud for the rest of the class. Finally the class had to say which tour they liked the most and why.

How did students react?
They loved it and enjoyed it a lot.

Did they engage with each other and you?
Yes. All of them participated and talked in Spanish.

1. A sheet with questions introducing the topic

They talked about how much they like cooking, and it is an opportunity for them to learn some Spanish recipes and to talk about Spanish gastronomy.

This is a two hours long class. In the first hour they had to look for recipes with the secret ingredient I gave them (of course in Spanish) and in the second hour they had to cook for themselves (learning all the new vocabulary in Spanish and present their dishes to a jury who would choose the best of the dishes among the participants. Students could talk about food or any other topic they wanted to come up with.

How did students react?
They enjoyed it a lot and asked me for more classes like this one

We started with a few tongue-twisters to move on to some websites where you can learn how to pronounce the “r” and other difficult sounds. Finally we practiced the linking between the words with a song.

They liked the song and the tongue twisters and they thanked me for the links.

Many of my students have problems using the past and differentiating it from the other forms of the past, so we decided to do a class to work on the past and I found the perfect song for it.

We are going to have poetry during the special dinner, so they can work on it.

First we started with an exercise to put verbs in the subjunctive form (it was a poem) and then we read poetry.
I split them in groups and each group had to discuss what their poem was about. Then I put 1 menber of each group together and have them explaining to the other what their poem was about. Finally we read them out loud trying to pronounce it perfectly.

How did students react?
Some loved it, others not so much… but in general they liked it.

Yes, they engaged pretty well.

They struggle a lot with Ser-Estar so I thought it would be a good idea to have a class on the differences between these two verbs and also the different meanings.

We brainstormed the differences between the verbs and then we played the ppt. After that they had to create a story using as many ser-estar verb forms as possible.

How did students react?
They are not very eager to learn grammar, but they appreciated being reminded of the differences and having some more practice. In the end the stories were fun!

Yes, they did.

Murphy’s law is funny and talks about simple bad things that have ever happen to everyone. It is good to tell your personal point of view about events, life… and to tell personal stories

I gave students different flashcards of Murphy’s laws and they had to say if they agreed with his perspective of things or not and to tell a personal story related to the law they picked up

How did students react?
They liked the game and the topic. Most of them could explain the quotations well and most of them told personal anecdotes.

There was a talk about this topic and my students wanted to talk about it.

First we talked about the laws in both the United States and the Spanish speaking countries. Then, one of my students, who was organizing the talk, took over and moderated the debate for and against gay marriage and whether or not gay people should be able to donate blood.

How did students react?
They love this kind of debates and this one was especially intense and great!

Yes, they did!

Just a debate.
