CN S12 ADV Finding My Soul Mate

Language and Section: Chinese/ Advanced

Class theme/topics discussed: Finding your soul mate

Goal of the class:
1) Practicing negotiation of meaning.
2) Constructing complex questions to find out specific information.
3) Exchanging as much information as possible in a short period of time.
4) Practicing agreement and disagreement structures to come up with solutions to specific problems.

Structure of the class:

Activity 1: 15 minutes
This activity is based on ranking through discussion. Students are given lists of different characteristics that they could find in partners. They have to rank them according to what they consider to be more or less important in a relationship.

Activity 2: 5 minutes
Individually, they have to come up with three meaningful questions that they would like to ask to potential partners.

Activity 3: 20 minutes
Speed-Dating: Students are divided into two groups, they have to sit in circles looking at each other. Each couple has a minute and a half to ask each other the questions they thought of in activity two and talk about any other information they want to find out.

Activity 4: 20 minutes
The students will work in groups of three or four. Each group is given a specific situation that describes a problem regarding relationships. They will have to come up with the best solution to each issue. For example: long distance, cheating, break-ups and misunderstandings with the family.

What worked well in this class? What did not work?
• This class works very well. Students are highly motivated to speak. They speak a lot and the class participation is high.
• Students finish the rehearsing for the role-play and we run out of time. So we will finish the role-play next class.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

• No. Students like the dating topic so much.

CN S12 ADV My Father is Li Gang

Class theme/topics discussed: My father is Li Gang

Goal of the class:
• To understand current social issue in China
• To learn how to express opinions on a current and complicated social issue
• To learn to debate in Chinese, make statements, to support them and to refute others’ statements

Structure of the class:
• The teacher introduces the topic to the student, and shows two videos to the students. the teacher pauses at intervals to answer students’ questions about the news report
• Students have questions to discuss with each other, mainly about what is happening in the video. The purpose is to make sure that students have a thorough understanding of the content.
• Students have a debate. One group is proposition side and the other side is opposition side. Each student has to refute the argument from the opposition team and then make his/her own argument.

What technology, media or props did you use?

• Handout , video

What worked well in this class? What did not work?
• Students are interested in the topic. The issue is a hot topic in China and the sentence My father is Li Gang is very popular in China now. It is important to let students know what is happening in China now. From the social issue, they have a deeper understanding of today’s China.
• The video is a bit hard for advanced students.

How could this class be improved/ modified?
• The teaching material is a little bit hard. It is best if i can find a video which matches their level.

CN S12 INT Chinese Internet Words

Language and Section: Chinese/ intermediate

Class theme/topics discussed: Chinese Internet Words

Goal of the class:
• To introduce some popular internet Chinese words to students

• To ask students to work on the definition and the appropriate contexts to use the words
• To encourage students to use the words

Structure of the class:
• Work in groups, look up the meanings of the phrase from the internet, discuss with each other, give a definition for the word and give an example of how to use it
• Present the word and the definition to the class
• Work in groups, to create a play in which those words will be used in appropriate context. First, set up your relationship, you can be students, friends, parents and kids, etc. then, to create a problem/obstacle, and at last, to provide a solution to the problem. Each student should have a balanced participation.
What technology, media or props did you use?

• Handout

What worked well in this class? What did not work?
• The topic is interesting and students are motivated to learn the meanings of the words
• Students cooperate with each other; some explain the meanings of words to other students
How could this class be improved/ modified?

• It’s hard to explain the contexts where the words can be used. More examples should be given.

CN F11 ADV Shopping

Language and Section: Chinese/ Intermediate

Class theme/topics discussed: shopping.  We discuss shopping places, how to bargain and how to make advertisement for an item.

Goal of the class:

l  Students will understand basic vocabulary about shopping in China.

l  Students will learn how to bargain in China. This is important cultural information students need to learn.

l  Students will make an advertisement show in Chinese

Structure of the class:

What technology, media or props did you use?

  • Handout

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

  • Students talk a lot and they learn to bargain with salesperson to try to reach a good price for the items in the handout.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

  • A better way of introducing vocabulary is needed. Introducing the vocabulary by the teacher incurs too much teacher talk. Maybe students can introduce vocabulary next time.

CN F11 INT Transportation

 

Language and Section: Chinese/ Intermediate

Class theme/topics discussed: Means of transportation (2). Some topics cannot be finished in one class. Means of transportation has been touched in last class. This class continues the topic of last class. 

Goal of the class:

l  Learning to debate.  Students are encouraged to express their views on certain topics. They need to defend their claims by providing reasons, explanations, and examples.

l  Students will learn vocabulary and expressions about transportations.

Structure of the class:

What technology, media or props did you use?

  • Handout

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

  • Students talk a lot and they love the debate. They need to defend for the mean of transportation they choose and provide reasons for it. The class is interesting and funny and they love the class.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

  • The debate is hard for students. I think they need more training in it.

CN F11 INT Zodiac signs

Language and Section: Chinese/ Intermediate

Date: 06/10/2011

Class theme/topics discussed: 12 zodiacs in China. This class is about Chinese culture and animals. I believe it is important to cultivate students’ cultural competence in learning the language.

Goal of the class:

Students will understand the origin of 12 zodiacs in China. A short video introducing the origin of the zodiacs will be played.

Students will learn vocabulary and expressions about 12 zodiacs and legends behind them

Structure of the class:

What technology, media or props did you use?

  • Handout

What worked well in this class? What did not work?

  • Students talk a lot and they love the origin and histories of zodiacs. The videos are interesting. Students’ participation is balanced. They know what is their zodiac and they love their own zodiac. The video is a bit hard for them.

How could this class be improved/ modified?

  • There is an exhibition in a nearby museum about zodiac. Maybe next time we can have  an off-campus class.
