The topic is really interesting for students. Especially some students’ parents from my class are immigrates. They feel it is important to learn something about immigration.

3) Role play: One student will a travel agent, the other one is customer. They will use the new words we just learnt to practice and talk about their needs

Students talked a lot during the warm up activity. Also they used new words to practice.

How could this class be improved/ modified?
I should count time for the 20 questions warm up activity because one student is always slow. Other students had to wait for her.

Goal of the class:
Learn how to memorize Chinese major dynasty and understand Chinese ancient history.

1) PPT introduction:
Show major dynasty to students and make it as a competition to memorize it.
Show a song to help students memorize these dynasties.
Distribute handout for new words and play taboo games
Show historical maps about different dynasties in China.
Show ancient costumes to students and let them discuss which one is your favorite.
2) Make a poster about Chinese ancient dynasties

What worked well in this class? What did not work?
By doing a poster, students learnt a lot. I put the poster in my lounge to decorate my lounge. It was really great!

How could this class be improved/ modified?
Should make sure everyone has equal chance to talk in class. Some student did not want to speak.

2 Warm up activity: Jeopardy ( In this game, everyone writes down ten answers to questions about themselves. After writing down the answers, people have to form pairs or small groups and try to find out what the questions are.)
3. Drugs (Introduce the topic by talking about Chinese character “毒” which means poisonous. Then talk about getting poisoned. At last talk about drugs. Is there drug problem on campus? What kind of drugs are popular? Why? Which school has the most serious problem about drug?)

What worked well in this class? What did not work?
Students talked for the first half an hour and I was just keeping the conversation alive. I felt they were more engaged with this issue since it is something that they have experiences with.

How could this class be improved/ modified?
There is another song that I wanted to show for students. However, I do not have enough time. I need to learn to manage time better.

Numbers and daily life

Goal of the class:
People in China do like some special numbers and do not like some numbers. By talking about numbers, students will understand Chinese Culture.

Structure of the class :
1 Count from 1 to 10 using hand gestures and explain reasons (3 minutes)
2 Introduce games which are related to numbers, such as 24 Points, Sodoku, Skip 7. Explain rules of 24 Points and play games of 24 points. (25 minutes)
3 Practice numbers such as one hundred, one thousand, one million, one billion. Ask students some fact using numbers. For example, what is the population in America, China and India? What is the population in CA? (5 minutes). Teach students how to say percent, over, less than etc. in Chinese. Instructor will read some numbers then ask students to write down the numbers. (2 minutes)
4 To introduce some fact in China. For example, people spent 1 million for car license plate. People spent 2000 dollars for cellphone number. To ask students what is the reason for these facts. Explain lucky numbers and unlucky numbers. Talk about lucky or unlucky number in other countries. To learn website number slang, such as 520 which means I love you. (15 minutes)
5 Talk about Pomona College lucky number 47. What are the 47 things you should do before graduating? (5minutes)

Students are interested in Chinese people’s concept. So this is a good topic.
However, the students are not so involved in the class. Some of them are too shy.
