How did you pick this theme or topic?
Halloween was coming so I thought it would be a nice topic to talk about. Students always have fun things to tell about their plans, their costumes, etc… And we also had to get started on the project, so after having found the recipes on the internet, we had to translate them into French.
How did you present the material? (Handouts, group work, general discussion, student presentations, etc.)
General discussion about their plans for Halloween
Group work for the translation – one group of two students and one of three.
How did students react?
They reacted well, they enjoyed talking about Halloween and what they were going to do.
They didn’t particularly like the translation exercise but since it was linked with the cooking project, they were interested in it.
Did they engage with each other and you?
They engaged with other about Halloween and asked questions to each other – and also to me.
As for the translation, they engaged with each other to find the best translation possible and asked me questions about the vocabulary when they were not sure about what they found in the dictionaries
What materials or media did you use? (articles, satellite tv, digital projector, etc.)
Cooking magazines as models

Would you recommend this activity for a future class?
Yes, they had to work with each other in French and to get involved in the translation.
